Nairobi court orders 21-day detention for US citizen wanted for Minnesota murder

Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina granted an application by the prosecution seeking to detain Hudeife Muhumed at Gigiri Police Station pending completion of the formal extradition process.

An American national accused of murder in the United States will remain in custody for 21 days as extradition proceedings commence in Nairobi.

According to court documents, the suspect is wanted in Minnesota for the alleged murder of Samantha Myaers on April 16, 2022.

Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina granted an application by the prosecution seeking to detain Hudeife Muhumed at Gigiri Police Station pending completion of the formal extradition process.

The court heard that Hudeife was arrested on October 29, 2025, in Ongata Rongai following a warrant of arrest issued by the US District Court for the District of Minnesota in July 2022.

US authorities allege that Hudeife sold drugs to Myaers, leading to her fatal overdose.

Investigations further indicate that the suspect fled the United States shortly after the incident and travelled to Kenya in an attempt to evade arrest.

In his ruling, Magistrate Onyina directed that Muhumed be detained as the Kenyan and US governments coordinate his extradition to face the charges in Minnesota.
