President Nyusi’s proposed meeting, slated for Tuesday, seeks to bring together all presidential candidates to de-escalate tensions.
The runner-up in Mozambique’s presidential election, Venancio Mondlane, has proposed stringent conditions for attending a meeting with President Filipe Nyusi aimed at resolving the ongoing political unrest. The crisis follows disputed election results that have plunged the nation into weeks of turmoil.
Mondlane, who garnered 20 per cent of the vote against Frelimo candidate Daniel Chapo’s 71 per cent, delivered his demands alongside a proposed 20-point agenda.

These include the re-establishment of what he terms “electoral truth” and holding those allegedly involved in falsifying the electoral process accountable.
Among his conditions, Mondlane has requested the dropping of legal proceedings against him, a virtual format for his participation, and the release of individuals arrested during protests he called for. He also seeks guarantees of political and legal security for all participants in the dialogue.
“The electoral truth is non-negotiable,” said Diniz Tivane, a representative of the Podemos party that supported Mondlane’s candidacy. “Votes are not bargained; they are counted.”
Political analyst Dercio Alfazema cast doubt on Mondlane’s commitment to dialogue.
“While he has accepted the invitation, his conditions suggest otherwise,” Alfazema remarked.
“If Mondlane refuses to engage, the meeting might proceed without him, further complicating efforts to find a solution. Dialogue remains our best hope.”
The crisis has taken a severe toll on Mozambique.
Allegations of fraud and widespread unrest have gripped the country since the October 9 elections. Protests have left at least 60 dead, and major economic centres and border areas are experiencing blockades, riots, and looting.
President Nyusi’s proposed meeting, slated for Tuesday, seeks to bring together all presidential candidates to de-escalate tensions.
However, Mondlane’s demands — particularly the inclusion of specific institutions and individuals in the talks — highlight the deep divisions and mistrust that linger.
