KMPDU, Kiambu County reach agreement ending five-month doctors’ strike

Under the agreement, the Kiambu County Government will immediately disburse one month of withheld salaries along with October 2025 pay, while the remaining arrears will be settled in installments in the 2026/27 financial year.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has called off its 151-day strike in Kiambu County after reaching an agreement with the county government.

This was agreed upon during a consultative meeting convened by the Council of Governors (CoG) at their headquarters in Delta Corner, Westlands, Nairobi, in an effort to find a lasting solution between the Kiambu County Government and KMPDU.

Under the agreement, the Kiambu County Government will immediately disburse one month of withheld salaries along with October 2025 pay, while the remaining arrears will be settled in instalments in the 2026/27 financial year.

Further, the County Government agreed to reinstate the deduction and remittance of union dues forthwith, with any pending dues to be paid as per the Return-to-Work formula. The deal also ensures that no medical personnel who participated in the industrial action will face victimisation.

“The strike that began on May 26, 2025, which has now gone on for over 150 days, is hereby called off,” said KMPDU Secretary-General Dr Davji Atellah. He urged doctors to begin returning to their duty stations over the weekend and to resume full services by Monday, emphasising the urgency of restoring health service delivery in the county.

The consultative meeting was chaired by Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, the CoG Whip, alongside Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Shariff Nassir, who heads the CoG Health Committee. Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and senior KMPDU officials were also in attendance.

Governor Abdullswamad emphasised the need to keep politics out of health service delivery, saying: “We need to ensure that politics stay out of our hospital wards, our operating theatres, and anything that affects the lives of Kenyans,” highlighting that patient welfare must remain the top priority.

Further, the County Government agreed to reinstate the deduction and remittance of union dues forthwith, with any pending dues to be paid as per the Return-to-Work formula. The deal also ensures that no medical personnel who participated in the industrial action will face victimisation.
