Mombasa varsity student arrested with Sh1.2 million heroin

The drugs were reportedly retrieved in the suspect's house by Moi International Airport Anti-narcotics officers.
A 24-year-old student from the Technical University of Mombasa was on Wednesday arrested with heroin worth Sh1.2 million.

"The detectives were acting on an intelligence report, which also led to the arrest of the student at his Mshomoroni house, Kisauni sub-county," the DCI said.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the drugs had been wrapped in a clear polythene bag.
"The heroin which has an estimated street value of Sh1.2 million was tested on site," the DCI said.
They added that the exhibit was secured pending further sampling at the government chemist, as the suspect awaits arraignment.
This comes barely two days after a Tanzanian woman was sentenced to 45 years in prison for being in possession of narcotics.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the woman was apprehended at the Moi International Airport while travelling to Mombasa.
Maimuna Jumanne Amir was apprehended at the Moi International Airport back in March 2021, carrying 5,389 grams of heroin worth Sh16,167,000.
They noted that the woman had concealed the drug haul in a black bag.
In his judgement, Mombasa Law Courts Principal Magistrate Martin Rabera, sentenced her to 35 years in prison for drug trafficking, with an additional 10 years for being in possession of drugs.
The ten-year sentence however carries an alternative fine of Sh48 million.
"The accused was fined Sh48,501,000 (three times the value of the drugs in her possession), in default, served 10 years in prison for the offence of trafficking in narcotic drugs, contrary to Section 4(a) of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act No. 4 of 1994," said the ODPP.
The government has continued to intensify its crackdown on narcotic drugs, particularly in coastal areas.
