State to roll out ID tracking system to give Kenyans real-time application updates

Kenyans will soon track the status of their national identity card applications in real-time through a new post-issuance ID tracking system, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced.
Speaking about ongoing reforms in the ID registration process, Murkomen said the system will provide updates via SMS notifications or an online platform, reducing long waiting times and uncertainty for applicants.

“As part of our continued efforts to enhance transparency and efficiency in the ID registration process, I will soon be launching the post-issuance ID tracking system,” Murkomen said in Nakuru.
He explained that the initiative aims to improve customer experience and make government services more accessible.
“By providing this service, we aim to reduce waiting time and eliminate uncertainty in the application process, ensuring that Kenyans have access to updates on their applications,” the CS said.
Murkomen also highlighted the government’s plan to introduce a national digital identity management system, which will include virtual IDs and digital wallets.
He noted that the digital wallet would allow citizens to store their identification documents on smartphones and integrate with various services, including government platforms, payment systems, and digital signatures.
“The digital wallet will be integrated with a wide range of services, providing access to government platforms, payment systems, and even digital signatures,” Murkomen said.

The initiative targets rural villages, schools and urban areas, ensuring that no Kenyan is left behind in the registration process.
“The mobile registration outreach programme we are launching today is another key part of this effort. By bringing services directly to the people, we aim to reach every corner of the country,” he said.
Murkomen added that the ministry is also working on improving ID registration services for Kenyans living abroad by strengthening partnerships with the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
