Ruto: They will get mad but I will keep building churches, just like the affordable houses

Despite huge criticism, Ruto remains resolute in his stance, arguing that building churches aligns with his vision for the country.

President William Ruto has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the building of churches across the country, dismissing opposition from his critics.

Speaking during a family church service at AIC Jericho in Makadara, Nairobi, Ruto said he would not waver in his support for places of worship, just as he continues to push for affordable housing and classroom construction.

"Because this is the will of God," Ruto stated, emphasising that he would not back down despite criticism.

"Tutamuaibisha shetani. Shetani hawezi kutuzuia kujenga nchi yetu ama kujenga makanisa zetu," he declared.

The President, who has been actively involved in various construction projects, noted that even at State House, work was ongoing. He assured the congregation of his support in completing the church, stating that his participation in such initiatives was rooted in his faith and did not require anyone’s approval.

"I am going to be a member of the construction committee of this church. I see there is still some work left. I am a member of AIC, and I know everything," he said.

"Shetani na watu wake wanaweza kukasirika wakitaka lakini tutajenga kanisa. (The Devil and his people can get angry if they want to but we shall build the church),” Ruto said

Ruto’s remarks come amid controversy over his recent pledge of Sh20 million towards the construction of Jesus Winner Ministry church in Roysambu.

The donation sparked mixed reactions, with some critics questioning its source. A group of youths even threatened to occupy the church in protest, demanding the money be returned, but security officers thwarted the plan.

In response to the uproar, the church leadership clarified that Ruto had been a long-time worshipper and that the donation was made following a request from the church’s overseer, Reverend Edward Mwai.

"On the issue of His Excellency the President of Kenya, Hon. William Ruto’s donation to the church, we wish to clarify to the whole nation that he has been our faithful worshipper since 2009. Hon. President Ruto pledged his support of Sh20 million upon request from our church's general overseer, Rev. Edward Mwai," said Secretary-General Raphael Mwiti in a statement.

The President also promised to mobilise his friends to raise an additional Sh100 million for the church’s construction, which is estimated to cost over Sh1 billion.

Despite the criticism, he remains resolute in his stance, arguing that building churches aligns with his vision for the country.
