Three activists linked to June 25 protests freed on bail as police probe arson, looting

Three human rights defenders arrested over their alleged involvement in the June 25, 2025 demonstrations in Nairobi have been released on a cash bail of Sh200,000 each as investigations continue.
The trio—John Mulingwa Nzau, Mark Amiani (alias General), and Francis Mutunge Mwangi (alias Chebukati)—appeared before Kibera trial magistrate, Irene Macia Kahuya, where police sought to detain them for 21 days to allow for ongoing investigations.

The prosecution alleged that the suspects were part of a group of individuals who infiltrated the peaceful protests and caused destruction of property and loss of life.
According to the DCI, the three are under investigation for multiple offences, including arson, theft, housebreaking, burglary and malicious property damage.
Authorities claim they were arrested on the night of June 27, 2025, while travelling in a vehicle bound for Mombasa.
Preliminary investigations reportedly link the suspects to the planning, mobilisation, and financing of individuals who hijacked the protests.
Police alleged their involvement led to widespread looting, forced entry into buildings, and attacks on police stations in Nairobi's central business district.
