Kamukunji Constituency launches '16-day campaign against Gender-Based Violence

Kamukunji Constituency initiated its "16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV)" on 28th November 2023 with a vibrant event hosted at a college in Airbase Ward. The event is organised by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and supported by 15 NGOs including the Department of Refugee Affairs, IOM, HIAS, NCCK, IRC, DRC, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), JRS, and RCK.

The event drew the presence of esteemed figures, such as top security officials, County Health volunteers, and community leaders, all coming together to support the cause of combating Gender-Based Violence during these 16 days of activism.

Steve Mwonge, Assistant County Commissioner, highlighted the importance of reporting any instances of violence, assuring the community of the government's commitment to addressing such matters promptly. "Gender-Based Violence is a challenge we must collectively confront," Mwonge said.

Balqiisa Dahir, a social worker, echoed Mwonge's sentiments, affirming their readiness to combat GBV within the community. Dahir highlighted the prevalent issue of underreported cases, often resolved through unconventional methods by local elders. "We aim to eliminate such violence as it fundamentally violates human rights," expressed Dahir, emphasising the imperative nature of eradicating GBV.

The international community has observed the "16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence" annually since 1991, spanning from November 25th to December 10th.
