According to police reports, Gakuru soaked a piece of cloth in paraffin and wrapped it around his body before igniting it, resulting in severe burns. Despite efforts by concerned neighbors to save him, Gakuru tragically succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital. While the police have moved his body to the Kenyatta National Hospital mortuary for further investigation, the motive behind his actions remains unclear.

This incident is part of a concerning trend of suicide cases, with another recent case involving the death of a 51-year-old man, Harrison Theuri, who died by hanging in his home in Subukia, Londiani. The authorities are yet to determine the motive behind Theuri's tragic decision.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the World Health Organization attributes such cases to various factors, including joblessness, academic pressure, financial difficulties, and mental health issues. With Kenya ranking 114 among the countries with the highest suicide rates, the growing number of reported suicide cases has raised calls for urgent action to address the underlying issues and provide support to those in need.
