KeNHA announces 10-day traffic disruption on Nairobi–Nakuru, Maai Mahiu roads for data survey

KeNHA announces 10-day traffic disruption on Nairobi–Nakuru, Maai Mahiu roads for data survey

While the disruptions are expected to be brief and controlled, KeNHA urged all road users to cooperate with traffic marshals and police officers stationed at designated survey points.

Motorists travelling along the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit and Nairobi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha roads should prepare for temporary traffic disruptions starting Thursday, July 10, 2025. This is after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a 10-day data collection drive along the two major corridors.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, KeNHA said the exercise will include brief interviews with motorists and surveys designed to gather vital transport data to inform infrastructure planning.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority seeks to inform the public on possible traffic disruption along the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit (A8) Road and the Nairobi–Maai Mahiu–Naivasha (A8 South) Road from Thursday, July 10, 2025 to Sunday, July 20, 2025,” reads the notice.

According to KeNHA, the exercise will facilitate scheduled interview surveys and data collection, during which some motorists may be stopped to share details about their travel routes and trip characteristics.

“During the data survey, motorists may be stopped to share their journey details,” the agency stated.

The specific types of data to be collected include axle load surveys, origin–origin-destination surveys, camera-based classified cross-sectional surveys and turning movement counts.

Assess traffic flow

KeNHA said the datasets will aid in assessing traffic flow, road usage and planning future improvements along the busy transport corridors.

While the disruptions are expected to be brief and controlled, KeNHA urged all road users to cooperate with traffic marshals and police officers stationed at designated survey points.

“KeNHA appeals to motorists and other road users to cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the notice added.

The announcement follows another recent advisory issued by KeNHA regarding traffic disruption on a different section of the national road network.

Last week, the agency notified the public of a partial closure along the Nairobi-bound carriageway of Mombasa Road, specifically between FUSO (Simba Colt) and the Southern Bypass Interchange (Ole Sereni), from Saturday, July 5 to Saturday, July 12, 2025, to allow for highway maintenance.

“KeNHA would like to notify the public of the temporary partial closure of the Nairobi-bound carriageway on A8 Road between FUSO (Simba Colt) and the Southern Bypass Interchange (Ole Sereni) from Saturday, July 5, 2025, to Saturday, July 12, 2025, to facilitate essential highway maintenance works along this section,” the Authority said in a statement issued on June 28.

KeNHA urged motorists to remain cautious and comply with traffic control measures implemented at work zones.

“Motorists are requested to exercise caution around the work areas, follow the proposed traffic management plan herein and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” it added.

The authority maintained that short-term inconveniences are necessary to improve long-term road efficiency and ensure informed investment in transport infrastructure.
