In a commendable operation, the Kenya Coast Guard Services (KCGS) has successfully rescued four fishermen who went missing during a deep-sea fishing expedition on November 30, 2023. The fishermen—Baraka, Brian, Fahadhi, and Baya—were expected to return to Ngomeni on December 2, 2023.

The KCGS initiated a seven-day Search and Rescue (SAR) operation. The families of the missing fishermen were reassured, and collaborative efforts with various stakeholders were intensified throughout this period.

Using Maritime Domain Awareness and strategic engagements, KCGS Director General Bruno Shioso confirmed the location of the missing fishermen. They were rescued in the High Seas by a foreign fishing vessel after being swept by strong winds and currents. Regrettably, one of their colleagues lost his life, presumably due to drowning.

In response, the KCGS deployed its vessel, successfully recovering the three surviving fishermen and arranging for their reunion with their families and friends. The vessel completed the recovery mission 256 nautical miles from the Port of Mombasa, expecting to arrive back in Mombasa at 0900hrs on December 28, 2023.
