Mudavadi warns Mt Kenya might lose deputy president post in 2027 if they shift support from Ruto
Mudavadi, who represented President Ruto at the church event, said the Mt Kenya region has significantly benefitted from development and leadership opportunities under the Kenya Kwanza administration. He noted that this has drawn envy from other parts of the country.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has issued a stern warning to the Mt Kenya region, urging its leaders and residents to fully back President William Ruto or risk losing the coveted Deputy President position in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a church service at the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) in Othaya, Nyeri County, on Sunday, Mudavadi cautioned that other regions are eyeing the seat currently held by Prof Kithure Kindiki, and a failure to solidly support the president could result in the region being edged out of the high-level post.

“There are many people, myself included, who are interested in the Deputy President position. If you’re not careful, the mountain will lose it,” warned Mudavadi. “A bird in hand is better than ten in the bush. Hold on to what you have and take it seriously.”
Mudavadi, who represented President Ruto at the church event, said the Mt Kenya region has significantly benefited from development and leadership opportunities under the Kenya Kwanza administration. He noted that this has drawn envy from other parts of the country.
“There are Kenyans out there who wish they had a fraction of what you have,” he said, adding that the region is fortunate to work with a president who places strong trust in its people.
Acknowledging Mt Kenya's historical contribution to the nation’s leadership, Mudavadi praised the late President Mwai Kibaki, referring to him as a visionary who upheld the rule of law and institutional integrity.
"I want to appreciate you people and, by extension, our third President Mwai Kibaki who was forthright and focused. He was a leader who believed in institutions and the rule of law," he said.
However, the Prime CS warned that despite the region’s strong current support for the government, wavering political loyalty could have consequences as the administration continues to showcase the results of its work.
“Remain united. Work with the president; work with other Kenyans that is where we stand,” Mudavadi urged.
Drawing comparisons with his native Western Kenya, Mudavadi highlighted that his region has always collaborated with national leadership despite never producing a president.
“For now, a president has never come from Western Kenya, but we live, work, grow, and defend this country. You cannot only defend it when a position comes from your region,” he said.
He further assured that the Kenya Kwanza administration is committed to delivering on its promises and will maintain transparency where challenges arise.
“This government is ready to fulfil all its commitments to Kenyans. Where there are doubts, we shall admit and explain to the people,” he affirmed.
Mudavadi also noted that the government is actively engaging with the youth across the country as it prepares for the new financial year, aiming to address their most pressing concerns.
