Heavy rains and thunderstorms forecast across parts of Kenya this week

The forecast advises that residents of the Central Highlands, Western region, and parts of North-western Kenya should prepare for heavier rains, with chances of localised thunderstorms in some areas.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert warning of increased rainfall and scattered storms affecting various parts of the country from Tuesday, August 12, through Monday, August 18, 2025.

The forecast advises that residents of the Central Highlands, Western region, and parts of North-western Kenya should prepare for heavier rains, with chances of localised thunderstorms in some areas.

“Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions may occur over parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands and the Rift Valley,” the department noted.

Temperature shifts are also expected nationwide. Daytime temperatures could rise above 30°C in the North-eastern and North-western regions, while nighttime lows might fall below 10°C in sections of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and around Mt Kilimanjaro.

Strong winds from the south to south-east, exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s), are forecast, mainly affecting the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, and parts of the South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western areas.

Regional forecast highlights

In Western Kenya and Rift Valley counties such as Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Kericho, afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely, with occasional rain in the mornings and evenings. Daytime temperatures will range between 28°C and 30°C, while night temperatures may drop to about 11°C.

The North-western counties of Turkana and Samburu will mostly have sunny weather early in the week, but isolated afternoon storms and night showers are expected toward the weekend. Maximum daytime temperatures may reach 35°C, with lows near 8°C at night in some places.

Central Kenya and Nairobi will see cloudy mornings that clear into sunny spells, with some afternoon showers in select locations. More widespread rain could occur on Saturday. Minimum temperatures may fall to 8°C midweek, while maximums hover around 26–27°C.

The North-eastern counties like Mandera, Garissa, and Wajir will mostly experience dry and sunny weather for much of the week. However, light showers might develop by Saturday night. Daytime highs will remain steady between 33°C and 35°C.

Residents of the South-eastern Lowlands should expect cloudy mornings followed by sunny afternoons throughout the week. No significant rainfall is anticipated, and temperatures will range from 28°C to 30°C during the day, cooling to around 9°C at night by the weekend.

The Coastal region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu, will have warm conditions with sunny intervals during the day and occasional light rain, especially on Friday and Saturday. Daytime highs will be around 28°C to 30°C, with humid nights between 19°C and 21°C.

The public is urged to remain cautious, particularly in flood-prone areas and where strong winds are forecast. The department advises everyone to keep following official weather updates and alerts.

Mariners and people living near the coast have also been warned about strong winds and rough sea conditions expected during this period.
