KNEC opens registration for July 2025 KCSE exams

This new series aims to accommodate private candidates, repeaters, and adult learners seeking to improve their academic performance.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has officially opened registration for the July 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination series.

This new series aims to accommodate private candidates, repeaters, and adult learners seeking to improve their academic performance.

In a circular dated January 20, 2025, KNEC's Chief Executive Officer, David Njengere also said that the candidates will be required to pay a registration fee of Sh7,200 through the e-Citizen platform.

"Please note that fee payment is mandatory for successful registration," Njengere stated.

The registration period will run from Monday, January 27, to Friday, February 21, 2025.

All eligible candidates according to the council must complete the process through the KNEC portal, which will be managed at the KNEC Headquarters, New Mitihani House in South C, Nairobi.

The July series is specifically designed for certain categories of learners, as outlined by KNEC. Eligible candidates include repeaters who have previously sat for the KCSE exams and wish to improve their grades.

These candidates can choose to register for all subjects as full repeaters or select specific subjects as partial repeaters.

Additionally, individuals who were registered for previous KCSE exams but could not sit for the tests due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness, are also eligible.

The series further targets adult learners who are not enrolled in regular schools but can provide proof of having completed primary education.

However, students attending regular schools and sitting for the KCSE for the first time, as well as those who do not meet the stipulated qualifications, are not eligible for this series.

Registration process and required documents

To successfully register, candidates must present the following mandatory documents:

• Statutory identification documents such as a national ID, birth certificate, or passport.

• A copy of their KCPE certificate.

• KCSE certificates or result slips for repeaters.

• A recent passport-size photograph (soft copy).

Going further, KNEC has warned that late registrations will not be accepted after February 21, 2025.

"There will be no provision for late registration, and all candidates must adhere to the set deadlines," the council reiterated.

Examination schedule

The July KCSE series includes both project-based and theory/practical examinations.

Projects for subjects such as Art and Design, Agriculture, Woodwork, and Computer Studies will be conducted between January and July 2025.

The theory and practical exams will follow, running from July 1 to August 1, 2025.

The exams will take place at centres designated by County Directors of Education (CDEs), and candidates must present proof of eligibility, such as their ID or birth certificate, to gain entry into examination centres.

For project-based subjects, candidates must provide information on the sub-county where their projects will be conducted and visit the respective Sub-County Directors of Education (SCDEs) after registration to be assigned centres.

Candidates repeating seven or more subjects as explained by KNEC, will receive a KCSE certificate, while those repeating fewer subjects will be issued result slips

The council has stressed the importance of ensuring that all registration details are accurate, including names, genders, birth years, and subject selections.

It has also reminded candidates to confirm the accuracy of their registration data, follow up with their respective County or Sub-County Directors of Education, and adhere to the guidelines provided to avoid inconveniences.
