KNEC opens applications for CBC assessment training

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has opened applications for teachers and teacher educators interested in training on competency-based assessment.

KNEC aims to boost the ability of educators to create quality assessment tools aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

In a notice on Tuesday, KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere said the initiative is part of the council’s commitment to enhancing the quality of assessments.

He said training will focus on developing standardised test items for learners in both basic and teacher education levels.

“The Council wishes to invite qualified teachers and teacher educators to apply for training in the development of quality test items for effective implementation of Competency-Based Assessment in Basic Education and teacher training levels,” Njengere said.

Those selected will be engaged by KNEC as contracted professionals when the need arises.

According to Njengere, applicants must demonstrate high levels of integrity and be either professionals or subject matter experts in the learning areas they intend to be trained in.

Qualified candidates should currently be teaching the relevant subjects in Primary School (Grades 4 to 6), Junior School (Grades 7 and 8), and Senior School—particularly those who are teaching at the secondary school level and are expected to handle Grade 10 learners in 2026.

Teachers from training colleges, including DTE-PP&P and DSTE, as well as those in the Stage-Based Pathway (Foundation, Intermediate, or Prevocational levels), are also eligible.

In addition, applicants must have relevant academic and professional qualifications and a minimum of three years of teaching experience.

They are also expected to be familiar with curriculum designs in their specific learning areas and be officially recommended by the head of their institution.

“Teachers and teacher educators already trained by KNEC should not apply,” Njengere said.

All applicants must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission and should submit their applications online by Friday, April 11, 2025.
