KeNHA closes Garsen-Witu-Lamu Road after River Tana overflows

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has closed a section of the Garsen-Witu-Lamu (A7) Road, which has been affected by the River Tana's breaking of its banks.
In a statement on Saturday, the authority said the affected section is between Gamba and Lango la Simba.

"This follows the ongoing heavy downpours experienced upstream that have resulted in the River Tana breaking its banks and subsequent overtopping of the road, thus hampering transportation activities," it said.
KeNHA urged road users to be cautious, even as it monitors the situation for further updates.

Kenya has been experiencing flooding in its March-May long rain season, with heavy downpours leaving at least 267 people dead and causing massive displacement and property damage in many parts.
The rains have also destroyed sections of highways, prompting the government to issue an advisory last week for Kenyans to limit their travel.
This week, however, following predictions by the Kenya Meteorological Department that the rains will subside as the season ends, the government has advised safe road usage as some of the damage caused by bad weather may lead to accidents.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has specially called on motorists to be extra careful as students head back to school ahead of their reopening on Monday.
