The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) have joined forces to revolutionize wildlife ranger training at the KWS Law Enforcement Academy in Manyani. Their focus? Integrating cutting-edge technology into the curriculum to keep pace with ever-evolving conservation challenges.
The collaboration materialized during a recent visit by a USFWS delegation led by Ms. Nancy Gelman and Mr. Keith Swindle, joined by Ms. Jo Shaw, CEO of Save the Rhino International UK. Hosted by KWS Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga and senior officers, the teams discussed the Academy's impressive track record in producing top-notch rangers. They proudly mentioned the Academy's role in training rangers who contributed significantly to the recent decline in rhino poaching.
Recognizing the need for continual improvement, both sides agreed to collaborate in further enhancing the training environment. This will involve incorporating cutting-edge technology into the curriculum, ensuring rangers are equipped with the latest tools and techniques to combat wildlife crime. The collaboration extends beyond technology, encompassing knowledge sharing, resource exchange, training programs, and best practices, aiming to solidify the Academy's position as a global center of excellence in wildlife conservation.
This partnership builds upon the Academy's established reputation. Since its foundation in 1990, it has evolved into a sought-after paramilitary training facility, attracting trainees from countries like Somalia and South Sudan, and training numerous conservancy rangers within Kenya. Throughout its history, the Academy has adapted to address changing needs, transitioning from internal wildlife officer training to comprehensive paramilitary drills with the support of the General Service Unit (GSU).
