Police disrupt a peaceful and orderly pro-Palestinian solidarity meeting at Cheche Books and Cafe in Lavington. Three of the participants were arrested.
Among those who were present in the meeting, included notable figures such as former deputy speaker and Daadab Member of Parliament Faraah Maalim. The participants are in support of Palestine and are perturbed by the plight of the Palestinian people.
The specific reasons for the arrests and the charges against those arrested are currently unclear, as official statements from authorities are yet to be issued. Earlier, a planned demonstration in front of the US Embassy in Kenya was canceled, after Gigiri police denied a request from Kenya Palestine Association to hold a peaceful pro-Palestinian demonstration outside the US Embassy and condemn Israel’s attacks in Gaza and to oppose US role in what they described as ‘genocidal’ against the Palestinian people.
Amidst the turmoil, Amnesty International Kenya strongly condemned the disruption and subsequent arrests, citing a violation of Article 37 of the Kenyan Constitution. Executive Director Irungu Houghton denounced the police's actions as unlawful, emphasizing the right to peaceful assembly.
Activist Boniface Mwangi also condemned the arrest terming it 'illegal, and foolish'.
