Kilifi teacher appeals for assistance to settle Sh3 million medical bill

A teacher from Kilifi County, currently stuck in a Mombasa hospital, is appealing to well-wishers for assistance in settling a medical bill of Sh3 million.
Imo Mercyline Okumu, an educator at St George's Secondary School in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, finds herself in a daunting predicament as she seeks help from well-wishers to alleviate the financial burden looming over her and her family.
The ordeal began when Okumu experienced unforeseen medical complications shortly after giving birth.
Shortly after giving birth, Okumu experienced health issues that resulted in her admission to the ICU on March 16, 2024, where she remained for a month.
This separation from her two-month-old breastfeeding baby continues to date.
High blood pressure
Her husband, Moses Imo Etyang, explains that she developed high blood pressure and diabetes suddenly, necessitating three medical surgeries.
”I appreciate doctors who worked tirelessly on the delicate medical condition of my wife," Etyang said, expressing gratitude for the efforts of the medical team attending to his wife.
Okumu's husband recounted the harrowing journey they have endured. Etyang stated that while his wife was in the ICU, she used up all of her Sh1.3 million teachers' insurance limit.
"We are appealing to the Ministry of Education, TSC, KUPPET, and all Kenyans of goodwill to come to the rescue," urged Etyang.
With the hospital bill reaching alarming proportions, the family seeks assistance to offset the debt, enabling Okumu to return home and reunite with her children, including her two-month-old baby whom she has yet to hold since her hospitalisation.
A group of teachers, along with her family, pooled together funds totalling Sh400,000, which they then used to cover the hospital expenses.
"I long to return home to reunite with my children, particularly my two-month-old baby. Despite being discharged on April 24th, I remain here due to the overwhelming medical bill," said Mercyline Okumu from her hospital bed.
Her family and she are reaching out to kind-hearted individuals for assistance in settling the bill, either through pay bill number 8055693, account number under her name (Mercyline Okumu medical funds), or by visiting her at Jocham Hospital Mombasa.
