Kenya issues evacuation alert for her citizens in Lebanon as Middle East conflict escalates

The region is on high alert after Iran vowed revenge on Israel, which it blames for the assassination of Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.

Kenya has urged its citizens in Lebanon to relocate to safer areas as heightened tensions in the region raise fears of a widening Middle East conflict.

On Tuesday morning, the State Department of Diaspora Affairs issued an advisory with contact information for evacuation purposes.

"Kenyans in Lebanon, we have noted with deep concern the unfolding situation in Lebanon," the statement read.

"Urgently register with us through this link: https://tinyurl.com/2m9nw4ww or call +96590906719, +96171175006, or +254114757002 for evacuation purposes," the department advised.

The region is on high alert after Iran vowed revenge on Israel, which it blames for the assassination of Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.

Haniyeh's death followed an Israeli strike on Beirut that killed Hezbollah's senior military commander, Fu'ad Shukr.

The developments have heightened concerns that Israel's ongoing war in Gaza, now in its ninth month, could escalate into a broader Middle Eastern conflict.

It is believed that Lebanon-based Hezbollah could play a significant role in any such retaliation.

The militant group has been engaged in daily exchanges of fire with Israel; on Saturday night, Hezbollah fired 30 projectiles, most of which were intercepted by Israel.

On Monday, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a drone attack that hit a military target in northern Israel, calling it retaliation for the recent assassinations and a show of support for Gaza.
