Somalia confirms death of senior Al-Shabaab leader behind Mogadishu mortar attacks
The suspect died alongside an undisclosed number of the militiamen who were guarding him.
The Somalia National Intelligence and Security Service (NISA) has confirmed the killing of a senior Al-Shabaab leader, reportedly to have been in charge of planning the mortar attacks in Mogadishu since 2023.
In a statement, NISA said the operation was carried out last night in the Sabeed area of the Lower Shabelle region, after closely monitoring the activities of the suspect named Horjoogahan.

The suspect died alongside an undisclosed number of the militiamen who were guarding him.
"About six bombing operations carried out by the NISA forces in the El-Hareiri area of the Hiran region killed 46 Khawarij who were among the leaders and militiamen, who were targeted at a place where they were sheltering," the statement adds.
The agency said it has increased the planned operations targeting Al-Shabaab, also identified as the Khawarij, with the Commander-in-Chief of the Agency leading the operations in the areas where they are taking place.
The killing of the Al-Shabaab leader was also confirmed by the White House in a post on X that said, "10 militia were permanently removed from the battlefield in Somalia yesterday".
"We haven't forgotten the threat posed by Jihadis. Ten more were permanently removed from the battlefield in Somalia yesterday. That brings the total to over 100 bloodthirsty terrorists killed since President Trump was sworn in," the post stated and ended with a warning to the remaining: "We will find you, and we will kill you!"
On Tuesday, an Al-Shabaab mortar attack killed three army recruits in Hiilweyne military camp near Balad town, signalling a rise in attacks in Mogadishu.
