Mary Wanjiku, a resident of a low-lying area in Mombasa, expressed the anguish of witnessing her home succumb to the floodwaters. "Everything is soaked; our furniture, clothes, and even important documents are all damaged. We never expected the floods to reach this level," she lamented.
The challenges extend beyond property damage, as businesses and daily routines are disrupted. Samuel Otieno, a small business owner, shared the impact on his livelihood, saying, "My shop is underwater. I can't open for business, and I don't know when things will return to normal. This is a major setback for us."
Concerns about health and safety are paramount, with fears of waterborne diseases spreading amid the flooding. Jane Akinyi, a mother of three, stressed, "Our children are at risk of falling ill. The water is dirty, and we don't have proper sanitation. We urgently need help."
Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir addressed the situation, acknowledging the gravity of the floods and the challenges faced by residents. In a press statement, he assured the affected communities that the county government was mobilising resources to provide immediate relief. "We understand the pain and suffering our people are going through. Emergency response teams are on the ground, working to evacuate those in danger and providing essential supplies to affected families," Governor Abdullswamad stated.
He urged residents to exercise caution and cooperate with emergency response teams. "We are doing everything in our power to manage the situation. I appeal to residents to stay vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and reach out to relevant authorities for assistance," the governor emphasized.
As Mombasa battles the deluge of floods, the resilience of its residents and the coordinated response from the government remain crucial in navigating through this challenging period.
