Nyali residents call on Mombasa County Government to address persistent drainage problems

Locals voiced concerns over inadequate drainage, resulting in rainwater flooding their homes.

Residents in Nyali are calling on the Mombasa County Government to address persistent flooding near the Quickmart Supermarket at Links Road.

Former Nyali MP Awiti Bolo, alongside other residents, voiced concerns over the plight faced by those residing near Quickmart Market due to inadequate drainage, resulting in rainwater flooding their homes.

Awiti expressed disappointment over the lack of action despite repeated pleas to the county authorities.

He emphasised the urgent need for a quick resolution, highlighting the health risks posed by stagnant water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

During a media briefing at the market, Awiti cautioned about the health hazards and the impact on the community if the issue persists.

Rajesh Shah, chairman of Nyali Links Butterfly Estate said the recent heavy rains confined many residents indoors for two weeks due to flooding caused by the absence of a proper drainage system.

Shah described the harrowing experience of being trapped in their homes and blamed the absence of a functional drainage system for the inundation.

Concerns were also raised by residents, expressing apprehension about a potential recurrence if rainfall persists.

Adding to the grievances, landlord Mary Atieno claimed county officials exacerbated the problem by allowing construction in water-prone areas.
