Kiambu Road set for expansion as Cabinet approves dual carriageway plan
The new dual carriageway is expected to reduce travel times, improve safety, and support economic growth by enhancing the flow of goods and people between Nairobi and Kiambu.
Commuters using the Nairobi–Kiambu route are set for smoother and faster travel after the Cabinet approved the long-awaited expansion of the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi road into a dual carriageway.
The Cabinet said in a dispatch on Tuesday that the project will widen the existing two-lane highway into a four-lane dual road, complete with service lanes, bypasses, and loops designed to ease congestion and improve mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.

It said the road will also include pedestrian and cycling paths to improve safety for non-motorised users.
“The corridor, serving Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town, currently experiences chronic traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours,” the statement noted.
Officials said the expansion project is aligned with the government’s plan to strengthen Nairobi’s metropolitan transport system under Vision 2030 and to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that promote efficient and inclusive infrastructure.
The new dual carriageway is expected to reduce travel times, improve safety, and support economic growth by enhancing the flow of goods and people between Nairobi and Kiambu.
The Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi stretch serves as a vital link between the capital’s northern suburbs and Kiambu County, an area that has seen rapid urban growth and commercial development in recent years.
According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), which is implementing the project, the upgrade will improve traffic management across the Nairobi Metropolitan area, including sections of Kiambu Road and Thika Superhighway.
“The project will also improve the level of service and safety for road users and enhance accessibility through service roads and non-motorised transport facilities,” KeNHA stated.
KeNHA added that the project involves converting the current single carriageway into a four-lane highway, supported by service lanes on both sides to ease local access.
The expansion will be carried out under the Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) model guided by the FIDIC Silver Book, which ensures efficiency in cost and timelines by assigning greater responsibility to the contractor.
To improve pedestrian safety, six footbridges will be installed along the route, in addition to designated crossings and other safety features.
The project will cover the main Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi section and adjoining routes, including Ridgeways Road, Kiambu Road to Thika Road, and UN Avenue through Runda.
