Tarmacking of Mvuma Nyuki Road in Eastleigh South Ward begins

One of the most neglected roads in Eastleigh South Ward, Mvuma Nyuki Road, is finally set to be tarmacked after years of complaints from residents and business owners.
The construction work began on Thursday, with heavy machinery, including caterpillars and lorries, seen excavating the land. Structures that had encroached on the road were also being demolished to allow for the expansion.

The ongoing project is expected to bring significant relief to thousands of people who use this road daily. Mvuma Nyuki Road serves as an important commercial hub, hosting various businesses such as hospitals, restaurants, retail and wholesale shops, and other enterprises.
Speaking during the launch of the project, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Eastleigh South Ward, Nicolas Juma, expressed his concern over the poor state of the road. He noted that the dust from the unpaved road had been causing health issues, particularly for children studying in a nearby school.
"There is a school here, and children have been developing lung diseases due to the dust. Once it is completed, the cases will reduce," Juma said.

The MCA further emphasised that the tarmacking of the road would not only improve health conditions but also boost businesses in the area. He assured the residents that the project would be completed within the next two months.
"This area will grow, and businesses around here will benefit. It will be completed in the next two months," he added.
Juma explained that the tarmacking of Mvuma Nyuki Road was one of his key campaign promises, and he was happy to see it being fulfilled. He also promised that more roads within the ward, including the stalled Kiambiu Road, would be tarmacked in the near future.
While the construction of the road has been welcomed by many, some business owners whose structures were demolished to pave the way for expansion have expressed mixed reactions.
Khadija Bulle, whose shop was among those affected, stated that although she lost her business premises, she was happy that the road was finally being tarmacked.
"We shall come back once it is completed. The dust from this road was too much for someone like me," she said.
Michael Karanja, a boda boda operator, noted that the poor state of the road had been increasing his expenses due to frequent tyre damage.
"Riding on this road has been very tough. Tyres flatten if you are not careful, but I'm happy to see this will come to an end very soon," he said.
Residents expressed hope that the project would be completed as scheduled and would not stall midway. The road stretches from 16th Street and passes through 17th and 18th Streets before reaching the well-known Inda Ade Garage.
Eastleigh South Ward is one of the five wards in Kamukunji Constituency and is known for its diverse population. People from different communities and backgrounds live and conduct business in the area.
