TSC appoints Evaleen Mitei as acting CEO as Macharia proceeds on terminal leave

In a notice in May, TSC had invited applications for the Commission Secretary/CEO role. The job, which is tenured for five years and renewable once, involves leading the Commission’s strategic direction and overseeing daily operations.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has appointed Evaleen Mitei as Acting CEO, as Nancy Macharia commences her terminal leave ahead of her official retirement on June 30, 2025.

In a notice dated June 1, 2025, Macharia confirmed she had officially stepped aside, paving the way for Mitei to take over in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive CEO.

“I am proceeding on terminal leave with effect from today, June 1, 2025, pending my retirement from the TSC on June 30, 2025, after serving the Commission in various capacities,” Macharia said in the internal memo.

“In the meantime, note that the Commission has appointed Evaleen Mitei to act as the Commission Secretary/CEO pending the appointment of my successor. I urge you to accord her the necessary support.”

In a notice in May, TSC had invited applications for the Commission Secretary/CEO role. The job, which is tenured for five years and renewable once, involves leading the Commission’s strategic direction and overseeing daily operations.

“The Secretary shall be the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission responsible for the implementation of policies, decisions and strategies of the Commission,” the advert read in part.

Applicants were required to possess at least ten years of experience in education, administration and management, public administration, human resources, or financial management.

They also had to meet the leadership and integrity requirements set out under Chapter Six of the Constitution and submit clearance certificates from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).

Macharia’s exit marks the end of a transformative tenure at the helm of the TSC, during which she led several key reforms in Kenya’s education sector.

She praised the Commission staff for their dedication and urged them to maintain their professionalism and commitment to the institution’s core values.

“I am extremely proud of you, not just as employees of the Commission, but also as an outstanding team. I urge you to keep working hard, continue delivering services that reflect the best of you, and protect the core values of our institution,” she said.

“Looking to the future, I am confident that you will accord my successor, the management team and the Commission’s Board the necessary support in steering the Commission to even greater heights.”

The leadership transition comes as the Commission continues to implement key policy reforms and navigate pressure over teacher management and education standards in the country.
