Detectives and officers from the Homabay Police Station in collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers from Ruma National Park, have apprehended three wildlife traffickers and seized a rhino horn valued at Sh2.9 million.

The operation, hailed as a significant victory in the fight against illegal wildlife trade unfolded at Rodi Market in Homa Bay County.

Based on credible intelligence, authorities apprehended the three individuals in possession of an endangered species trophy.

The suspects were identified as Benard Omondi Sunga, a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) service member, and his accomplices, George Oloo and Argwings Watta.

The trio were arrested in a black Kluger, registration KBM 463G, at Rodi Market. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered a concealed 2.9-kilogram rhino horn, valued at approximately Sh2.9 million.

The rhino horn, often sought after for its supposed medicinal properties and as a status symbol, is one of the most trafficked items in the world, despite international laws prohibiting its trade.

The three suspects were immediately arrested and charged with wildlife trafficking offenses.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), along with KWS and other stakeholders, has vowed to continue its crackdown on wildlife trafficking, which threatens the survival of various endangered species.

In a statement, the DCI emphasised its commitment to curbing illegal wildlife activities and ensuring that those involved in these crimes are brought to justice.

"The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in its mission, partnering with stakeholders in the fight against wildlife trafficking," the DCI said.
