This initiative dubbed the Security Sector Counter Violent Extremism program, equipped them with vital insights into the evolving spectrum of terrorist threats and effective response strategies.
In a statement, the Kenya Defence Forces emphasized that this program represents a proactive step towards bolstering national security and combating extremism with informed strategic actions. The event, held at the DCI training school, was presided over by Colonel Yahya Mohamed, the coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Center.

Colonel Mohamed highlighted the significant achievements of the multi-agency approach, particularly since the program's inception seven years ago. He commended the recorded milestones but expressed concern about the constant transformation of terrorism, evolving into new and more sophisticated forms. This highlighted the need for a shift in tactics and approaches to effectively counter this dynamic threat.
Striking a crucial point, Colonel Mohamed cautioned against solely relying on force to respond to terrorism. He stated, "Our program embraces a more welcoming approach towards the youth, prioritizing engagement over force." This approach emphasizes deradicalization training, promoting a sense of belonging among youth, and equipping them with practical skills for daily life.
He reiterated that countering violent extremism is a protracted and demanding endeavor, necessitating a united front. Multisectoral collaboration, coupled with active engagement with women, youth, and madrasa students, are crucial pillars for achieving success in this ongoing struggle.
