President Ruto to rename school after Chebukati, build 15 classrooms

Chebukati, who served as IEBC chairman for six years until January 17, 2023, died on February 21, 2025, in Nairobi while undergoing treatment. He was 63.

President William Ruto has announced plans to upgrade a school in Kiminini and rename it after the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Wafula Chebukati.

Speaking during Chebukati’s burial service at his home in Sabatia, Kiminini Constituency, Ruto praised him for his integrity and role in overseeing the 2022 general election transparently.

He pledged to build 15 classrooms and an ICT centre at the school as part of the tribute.

“I agree with your leader that we will rename the school that is near here and I will help to build 15 classrooms plus ICT centre because Chebukati used ICT to ensure the integrity of the elections in Kenya,” Ruto said.

“For the first time, we had an election that was open as it was because of technology. We shall build the school in respect of Chebukati, a Kenyan and a patriotic citizen,” he added.

Chebukati, who served as IEBC chairman for six years until January 17, 2023, died on February 21, 2025, in Nairobi while undergoing treatment. He was 63.

Family spokesman Eric Nyongesa revealed that Chebukati had been diagnosed with brain cancer in April 2023, shortly after leaving office.

He underwent surgery in Germany, which was successful, and returned home to recover.

However, he later suffered a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment in Nairobi.

“Because of the stage in which the cancer was, the doctors recommended that he undergoes an immediate surgery, and the family having explored many options, he underwent a very successful operation,” Nyongesa said.

After recovering, Chebukati remained active in global discussions on election technology until early 2024.
