Most regions to experience brief dry spell before rains resume at the Weekend
The department has advised Kenyans to stay informed about the weather and take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall and temperature changes.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted a brief pause in rainfall across the country this week, with rain expected to return at the weekend.
According to the department’s weather outlook for the period of March 11 to 17, 2025, most regions, including Nairobi, the Highlands to the west and east of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, the Coast, and parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya, will experience rain.

However, rainfall intensity is expected to decrease by midweek before picking up again towards the weekend.
While the rainfall is set to be less intense in the middle of the week, isolated heavy downpours may occur at the start and end of the forecast period.
This means there could be significant rainfall at certain times in specific areas.
Temperatures will remain high in some parts of the country, with daytime highs exceeding 30°C in the Coast, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya.
On the other hand, the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region will experience colder nights, with temperatures dropping below 10°C.
“The MJO is expected to be in phase two from the second week of March, which may lead to an earlier-than-anticipated onset over some parts of the country,” explained David Gikungu, Director of Meteorological Services.
The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a weather phenomenon that causes patterns of clouds, rain, and storms to travel across the globe, affecting rainfall and weather patterns. The MJO’s presence in the region is expected to increase rainfall and storms, while its absence will lead to drier, hotter conditions.
The department has advised Kenyans to stay informed about the weather and take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall and temperature changes.
In addition, farmers have been encouraged to prepare for the rains and consult with local extension officers to optimize their agricultural activities.
The ongoing rainfall, which has been affecting Nairobi and many other parts of the country since Sunday evening, is expected to provide much-needed relief for the areas that have been suffering from hot and dry conditions. The forecasted rains are expected to improve the situation and bring some comfort to the country.
The March 2025 weather outlook, released at the end of February, also predicted near-average to above-average rainfall in some areas, with certain parts of the country expecting below-average rainfall.
