President William Ruto has confirmed Kenya's commitment to host and conclude the remaining phase of peace talks between the Government of South Sudan and hold-out opposition parties. The decision follows a phone conversation between President Ruto and South Sudan President Salva Kiir on Tuesday evening.
President Kiir had previously requested Kenya's involvement on December 25, 2023, to facilitate the peace talks in Rome, Italy, under the auspices of the Community of Sant’Egidio. President Ruto promptly engaged with the Community of Sant’Egidio to ensure the success of the mediation efforts.

Emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in the peace process, President Ruto personally reached out to all opposition parties under the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance. He expressed optimism, stating, "I am encouraged that almost all the parties have responded positively to our call."
Kenya is preparing to welcome the involved parties to Nairobi for pre-mediation consultations in the coming days. President Ruto highlighted the need for international support, inviting various stakeholders, including IGAD, the East African Community, the UN, the AU, the Quad, and partner countries, to back this noble effort.
The peace talks, set to resume in Nairobi, hold significant promise for resolving longstanding issues between the South Sudanese government and opposition parties. Since gaining independence in July 2011, South Sudan has faced internal political challenges, leading to ethnic tensions and conflicts.
