Tension as Somali intelligence officials kill Kenyan police officer at border

A Kenyan police officer was on Friday shot dead by Somali intelligence officials in an attack that also left his colleague injured and their weapons stolen.

According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was among five officers who were manning the Kenya-Somalia border point four when they were approached by tens of National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) officers who were firing towards them.

"In the process, one police constable was fatally shot in the stomach and another was shot in the left upper hand and is currently being treated at Mandera Referral Hospital and in stable condition. The Somalia NISA officers also robbed firearms," a police report shows.

Police have linked the attack to the foiled abduction of a Chinese national by suspected terrorists who have since been arrested.

"The motive of the attack was the revenge of previous arrest of terror suspects (aborted Chinese abduction) and the attack was coordinated by a brother of one of the suspects who is a NISA officer as per the information from Somalia authorities," the report seen by The Eastleigh Voice says.

The incident that was reported at the border police post has caused tension along the border.

The matter is being handled by the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU).
