A section of Kenyan readers was caught off guard on Tuesday morning as various entities and media houses pranked them on social media as the world marked April Fool's Day.

First to prank Kenyans was The Eastleigh Voice with its article titled "Nairobi Expressway to introduce dedicated boda boda lanes – Transport CS Davis Chirchir" that implied that the government had dedicated Sh12 billion towards the project set to begin in June describing it a "first of its kind" in the continent that would allow motorcycle riders the freeway to move without interfering with motor vehicles.

The Russian Embassy in Nairobi was not left behind as it announced plans to have a unique hybrid of the Russian Volga and Bugatti Chiron dubbed Volgatti assembled in Mombasa starting next month ahead of their rollout for taxi services in the country.

Popular eatery Java on its part, made the pranks juicier by announcing a new unusual dish to its menu- "omena matumbo wrap with miwa (sugarcane) juice!"

Celebrities too were not left behind, with singer Judith Nyambura Mwangi, aka Avril, making a "pregnancy announcement" with an earlier image of her bump only to later laugh at the congratulatory messages she received from her fans.

"Face reveal. It's April! My month! Of Course, I was going to start it with a bang! Thank you for the heartfelt wishes. What a morning!! #NaHiiEconomy!! #AprilFoolsDay" she posted hours later after many of her fans had been fooled.

Celebrity couple Terrence and his wife Milly Chebby, on their part, claimed they have finally made a decision to fully relocate to China, where they currently are on a business trip.

"Finally relocating fully, it's been a hard decision to make but finally we are happy to announce that we will be relocating from Kenya. To our online family, thanks for always holding us down and being there for us. We look forward to creating more content over this side as well as setting up our first ever home appliances and electric shop, keep those orders coming through millychebby page."

Across the borders, NTV Uganda's senior reporter Sudhir Byaruhanga claimed President Yoweri Museveni had officially declared his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as the presidential candidate for the 2026 elections after a long closed-door meeting of the NRM Executive Committee.

"President Museveni has called for an emergency meeting of the top brass in the army. More details will follow," the post added.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, April Fools' Day received its name from the custom of playing practical jokes on this day—for example, telling friends that their shoelaces are untied or sending them on so-called fools' errands. Although the day has been observed for centuries, its true origins are unknown and effectively unknowable.

The day is marked in most countries on the first day of April.

"It resembles festivals such as the Hilaria of ancient Rome, held on March 25, and the Holi celebration in India, which ends on March 31," notes Britannica.com
