DCI launches probe into chaos that disrupted church service in Kasarani

Preliminary investigations have established that the gunshots heard during the incident were fired by VIP security personnel and licensed civilian firearm holders, reportedly in an attempt to protect the leaders from the unruly group, which had already begun damaging parked vehicles and church property.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into a riotous incident that disrupted a church service in the Mwiki area of Kasarani Sub-County on Sunday, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was in attendance alongside other politicians.
In a statement, the DCI said it seeks to establish the root cause and motive behind the disruption.

“According to local authorities, over one hundred motorcycles carrying two to three pillion passengers arrived at the church venue from Kangundo Road, right behind the former Deputy President’s convoy. The riders allegedly caused commotion within the church, demanding money from the politicians.”
The statement added that police officers from Mwiki Police Station, who heard gunshots from the church grounds, were quickly mobilised to disperse the group. The attackers retreated, restoring calm to the area. Several individuals were detained, and ten abandoned motorcycles were taken to Mwiki Police Station.
Preliminary investigations have established that the gunshots heard during the incident were fired by VIP security personnel and licensed civilian firearm holders, reportedly in an attempt to protect the leaders from the unruly group, which had already begun damaging parked vehicles and church property.
The DCI further revealed that the Mwiki police command indicated the church had failed to notify police of the planned event, which involved political leaders. As a result, no prior security measures were in place to manage any potential disruptions.
“The National Police Service urges members of the public to refrain from such unruly behaviour that undermines peace and safety. Incidents involving violence and intimidation not only tarnish the sanctity of community events but also pose a significant threat to the well-being of all attendees.
It is crucial for individuals to express their concerns through proper channels rather than resorting to disorderly conduct, which could lead to serious consequences. Let us work together to foster an environment of safety and security during public gatherings,” said the DCI.
As police pursue those responsible with the aim of bringing them to justice, the incident has been noted as one among several similar occurrences witnessed recently in various parts of the country.
Gachagua, in response, linked the incident to a senior Nairobi politician, accusing him of orchestrating the chaos by sending hired goons to disrupt the service.
“You no longer seem to care that, through Governor Johnson Sakaja, you are sending thugs to disrupt a church service. That’s fine—you can carry on. We are aware that the Deputy Inspector General instructed the police not to attend,” Gachagua claimed.
