Murkomen vows tough action against scrap metal vandals

The warning comes just months after the Scrap Metal Dealers Association expressed alarm over government plans to consolidate 42 state corporations into 20 entities, a move they feared could trigger a spike in illegal activities.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to scrap metal dealers found vandalising critical national infrastructure, such as roads and electricity installations.
Speaking on Saturday, April 26, CS Murkomen revealed that security officers had already been deployed across the country to tackle the offenders. He further noted that the Ministry was collaborating with the judiciary to ensure tougher penalties are imposed on those convicted.

"Moving forward, we shall continue to roll out more robust strategies to guarantee that individuals sabotaging our roads and essential infrastructure for scrap metal are dealt with firmly," Murkomen said.
"Moreover, we seek greater collaboration with the judiciary. We do not want suspects involved in major crimes to be granted lenient bail terms, only to return and continue terrorising society," he added.
The CS further highlighted that significant strides had been made in the ongoing operation, revealing that a major criminal syndicate involved in infrastructure theft had recently been dismantled.
He affirmed that efforts to secure key facilities were already bearing fruit. "Our critical infrastructure is being safeguarded, and I am very pleased with the progress made so far by our regional and county security teams in completely taking down the gang responsible for stealing transformers in this county," Murkomen stated.
