Flood alert: Lamu urges caution as heavy rains raise River Tana levels

Among the hazards identified are river overflow, flash floods, damage to property and infrastructure, threats to human and livestock safety, and disruptions to transport and utility services.
Residents of Lamu County have been urged to remain on high alert as the risk of flooding along the River Tana rises due to ongoing heavy rainfall.
The County Government, through the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), has issued a warning, cautioning that water levels in the river could increase rapidly, posing a threat to low-lying areas.

Authorities have advised residents to take the necessary precautions to safeguard themselves, their families, and their property.
The EOC, working in coordination with the Kenya Meteorological Department, reported that persistent downpours are expected to continue for the next seven days, further heightening the risk of flooding.
"Water levels in the River Tana may rise sharply, leading to possible overflow into adjacent villages," the EOC said in a statement.
Among the hazards identified are river overflow, flash floods, damage to property and infrastructure, threats to human and livestock safety, and disruptions to transport and utility services.
The situation has already begun to deteriorate in some areas, with Daba becoming inaccessible from Bultu Mulitu after the seasonal River Galole overflowed into the River Tana.
Authorities have warned that if the heavy rains persist, flooding could spread to other vulnerable areas, including Dide Waride, Moa, and surrounding villages, within five to seven days.
The Emergency Operations Centre has activated an emergency hotline for residents seeking assistance or information. Those in need can contact 0714 888 889.
The County Government has assured residents that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates as conditions develop.
Meanwhile, officials are encouraging communities living along the riverbanks to move to higher ground where necessary and to remain alert to any changes in the river’s water levels.
The County Emergency Team reiterated the importance of heeding official advisories to minimise potential loss and ensure the safety of all residents.
