Interior CS Murkomen allays fears of increased Al-Shabaab attacks

Emphasising the sensitivity of counter-terrorism efforts, the CS called for patriotism and discretion in how the matter is discussed publicly, noting that officers involved in safeguarding the country deserve commendation.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has allayed public fears of a surge in Al-Shabaab attacks, noting that the strong collaboration between local communities, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), and the National Police Service (NPS) is instrumental in detecting and thwarting planned assaults.
At the same time, he confirmed that government counter-terrorism strategies along the Kenya–Somalia border have been significantly strengthened.

Speaking on Friday after chairing a county security briefing at the Embu Regional Commissioner's office, Murkomen acknowledged that although three police officers were injured by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted on Thursday, the operation was ultimately successful. One Al-Shabaab militant was neutralised, another arrested, and various equipment, including firearms and ammunition, were recovered.
Emphasising the sensitivity of counter-terrorism efforts, the CS called for patriotism and discretion in how the matter is discussed publicly, noting that officers involved in safeguarding the country deserve commendation.
"This issue should not be portrayed as a success for the enemy. Instead, focus should be placed on the swift and effective response by our officers. Until stability is restored in our neighbouring countries, we will continue facing such challenges. We are providing our officers with the right equipment to detect threats and confront the enemy," he said.
Murkomen added that the NPS would, in due course, release comprehensive data detailing the security measures being implemented to safeguard the nation.
He also commended the ongoing cooperation between Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif and security officials, describing it as crucial in the fight against the militant group.
"I am proud of what the governor is doing. We have successfully foiled many attacks," he stated.
The CS further noted that incidents of attacks on villages and highways have declined significantly, attributing this to improved intelligence gathering and rapid response efforts.
