Boost for farmers as sugarcane prices raised to Sh5,500 per tonne

Sugarcane farmers have received a boost after the government announced a new minimum price of Sh5,500 per tonne, up from the previous Sh5,300.

The revised price, which comes into effect on May 26, 2025, was approved by the Cane Pricing Committee and will apply to all 15 licensed sugar millers across the country, including newly leased public factories.

In a letter to the managing directors of the sugar factories, Agriculture Principal Secretary Kipronoh Ronoh said the adjustment was informed by the sugar prices recorded between February and April this year.

“Based on the prevailing ex-factory sugar prices over the past three Months (February 2025, April 2025), the price of cane has been increased from the current Sh5,300.00 per tonne to Sh5,500.00 per tonne, effective May 26, 2025,” the PS wrote.

Ronoh directed all millers to pay farmers without delay, stressing the importance of honouring the new price to protect the livelihoods of farmers in sugarcane-growing regions.

“You are hereby requested to adhere to the new minimum cane price while making payments to the farmers on time,” he said.

The increase is part of ongoing government efforts to stabilise the sugar industry and ensure fair earnings for growers.

The Ministry of Agriculture said this step reflects its commitment to supporting farmers through better pricing and consistent payments.
