FIDA demands probe into Alliance Girls' sexual abuse allegations

The demand follows an explosive report by 'Africa Uncensored', which exposed multiple allegations of grooming, abuse and institutional silence surrounding longtime teacher Peter Ayiro.
The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) now wants the Ministry of Education to hold Alliance Girls High School accountable for systemic failures that allegedly allowed decades of sexual misconduct by a senior teacher to go unpunished.
The demand follows an explosive report by Africa Uncensored, which exposed multiple allegations of grooming, abuse and institutional silence surrounding longtime teacher Peter Ayiro.

Ayiro, a History and German teacher and Christian Union (C.U.) patron at the school, is accused of manipulating his position of authority to target vulnerable students over the years.
According to the report, over two dozen former students, teachers and staff provided over 60,000 words of testimony, revealing a long-running pattern of misconduct shielded by school administrators and a culture of silence.
Former students described Ayiro as charismatic and spiritually authoritative—traits that earned him unusual access to students’ emotional lives and led, in several cases, to inappropriate and allegedly non-consensual relationships.
Christine Mungai, a former student and the journalist behind the investigation, shared her own story of a 2006 encounter at Ayiro’s on-campus residence, which she described as “disorienting and exploitative” due to the power dynamics involved.
Another former student, identified as Ruth* from the class of 2019, said Ayiro began texting her suggestively in 2020 before the situation escalated into sexual encounters during the Covid-19 lockdown.
The report includes five firsthand accounts: two cases of non-consensual physical contact while still in school, one non-consensual kiss after graduation, and two emotionally intense relationships that turned physical.
The report also notes that a 2018 Facebook post by an alumna from the mid-2010s also alleged a pregnancy involving a teacher, speculated by many to be Ayiro, indicating that the alleged misconduct spanned more than 20 years.
Despite recurring concerns, Ayiro reportedly maintained strong ties with the school administration, particularly with the then-principal Dorothy Kamwilu. Witnesses said some teachers attempted to warn students discreetly but avoided formal complaints due to fears of retaliation and the futility of challenging Ayiro’s influence.
“When Mungai presented her findings to the principal and Board of Management (BOM), they expressed shock but pressured her to delay or drop the story, prioritising the school’s reputation over accountability,” reads the report.
