Nation Media Group fights malicious online campaign

Last week, the company stamped a fake circular claiming that it had issued a notice of redundancy to 600 of its employees.

The Nation Media Group has defended itself against an online misinformation campaign that has been trending online in the last few weeks.

In a brief statement, the company said the sole objective of the campaign was to drive a false narrative about the organisation and the content on its platforms.

“NMG wishes to reiterate that all content about itself as a company is and will continue to be published on its official website and social media platforms. In addition to this, all news content can be confirmed on NMG’s official news websites and verified social media accounts.

The company urged its readers and viewers to corroborate suspicious headlines, news items, and memos bearing NMG’s mastheads or logos, but not originating from its platforms against its official websites and social media pages.

Last week, the company stamped a fake circular claiming that it had issued a notice of redundancy to 600 of its employees.

“Kindly note that the poster circulating on social media and the content it contains are fake and did not originate from the Nation Media Group,” the company said on Friday before publishing an editorial on the “well-coordinated, vicious, malicious, and unsubstantiated” online campaign against it.

In the editorial, the company said the malicious propaganda has been running under the hashtag #RIPNationMedia on the X platform.

It attributed the wave of online disinformation to the launch of its investigative series dubbed “Broken System,” which runs every Tuesday.

The Kenyan constitution provides a strong foundation for the protection of freedom of the press and the independence of the media under the Bill of Rights, which establishes a robust foundation for the protection of freedom of the press, emphasising the country's unwavering commitment to democratic principles.
