Four dead, one critically injured in Kibwezi-Kitui road crash

Reports indicated that the group was returning from a dowry ceremony ahead of a wedding planned for next Saturday.
Four people have died and one is in critical condition following a car crash on the Kibwezi-Kitui road in Makueni County on Saturday night.
Kibwezi Traffic Police Commander Maurice Situma said the crash happened around 11:00 pm near Utafiti, Kisayani in Kibwezi West constituency.

The vehicle’s tyre reportedly burst, causing the driver to lose control and the car to roll several times.
“Three people died on the spot while two others were rushed to AMREF Kibwezi Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, one of them later succumbed to injuries at the hospital, leaving one survivor still receiving medical care,” Commander Situma confirmed.
Among the victims was a 10-year-old child and a teacher from St. Mary’s Kinyambu Secondary School who was driving the car. Reports indicated that the group was returning from a dowry ceremony ahead of a wedding planned for next Saturday.
In a separate incident, a boda boda rider and his passenger were killed after being hit by a Mash Poa bus at Sultan Hamud along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Reports indicated that the boda boda duo had just transported a colleague’s body from Sultan Hamud hospital mortuary after he was knocked down by a private saloon car in Kalimbini area.
The incident caused significant traffic congestion on the highway, which police later cleared.
The recent tragedies add to a disturbing national pattern of road crashes. Authorities report that about 50 people have lost their lives in major crashes across the country in the past few days alone.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) released data in January 2025 showing that road fatalities continue to rise. According to the report, 4,748 people died on Kenyan roads in 2024, an increase of at least 400 deaths compared to 2023, when 4,324 fatalities were recorded.
The report highlighted December 2023 as the deadliest month of that year, with 470 people losing their lives on the roads.
The statistics have intensified public concern over road safety and sparked criticism over the perceived inaction by authorities to curb the ongoing carnage.
