Blogger charged with publishing false information on Mwingi Central MP Mulyungi

A blogger who allegedly published false information on Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi over corruption was on Tuesday charged before a Nairobi court.

Kitovoto Mutinda appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego and denied the six charges levelled against him.

According to the charge sheet, on August 9, 2024, Mutinda is said to have intentionally published false information through the write-up account Kinuko 96.5 FM "MP Mulyungi secret millions. The Kitui tender scandal. Why are Kitui MCAs ignoring their own corruption on the Kitui Council WhatsApp group with the intent that the data shall be considered or acted upon as authentic?"

On the second count, the court heard that Mutinda published the same information on the Kitui professional forum on WhatsApp.

The court was told that Mutinda continued publishing the same information on different platforms, information that the MP felt was ruining his name.

He also faced another charge that on September 8, 2024, he used his WhatsApp account, stating that MP was bribed, words the prosecution said harmed the legislator.

Mutinda is also said to have labelled MP Mulyungi as an enemy of development.

Through his lawyer, the accused defended himself, pleading to be released on reasonable bond terms since he is a family man and his place of abode is known.

However, the prosecution did not oppose Mutinda's release on bond.

He was released on a bond of Sh500,000 or a cash bail of Sh250,000.

The case will be mentioned on September 3 for pretrial.

MP Mulyungi has been listed as a first witness with three others in the case.
