King Charles visits Mombasa's Mandhry Mosque

King Charles III was on Friday welcomed to Mandhry Mosque by members of Mombasa's Muslim community during the final day of his four-day state visit.

The King braved the chilly morning weather and rains to visit the mosque where he heard about the interfaith dialogue work of the Coast Interfaith Council of Clerics.

King Charles also visited the Mombasa Memorial Cathedral where he joined an interfaith meeting focussing on peace, security and development, before unveiling a plaque commemorating his visit.

During his Mombasa visit, the King and Queen Camilla toured the Mtongwe Naval Base, where he watched the Kenya Marines, trained by the Royal Marines, demonstrating a covert beach landing, showing defence collaboration in action.

The King also visited a coral conservation project in Kuruwitu, where he was briefed on a local initiative to re-populate the sea with coral.

The Kuruwitu Community Welfare Association (KCWA) works to protect the area from overfishing, climate change, and uncontrolled fish and coral collection while supporting the livelihoods of local communities.

The KCWA demonstrated to His Majesty the process of coral gardening; the production of artificial coral restoration structures, and coral ‘plugs’ made of concrete and coral fragments.

At Nyali Beach, the Royals met ‘Tide Turners’, a group of young volunteers who clean up the local beaches, and saw how plastic is being repurposed. Here, the youth presented the King with a new recycled plastic throne.

The King and Queen were later seen off at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa by their hosts President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto.

The President was accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi among other dignitaries.
