National, county governments fail to implement 79 per cent of audit recommendations - Auditor General

Gathungu expressed alarm over the continued failure by both national and county governments to act on her office’s recommendations, warning that it undermines transparency and service delivery.

Nearly 80 per cent of audit recommendations by the Auditor General remain unimplemented, raising concerns over accountability and the proper use of public funds, Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has said.

Speaking during the launch of the Auditor General’s Eastern Regional offices in Embu County, Gathungu expressed alarm over the continued failure by both national and county governments to act on her office’s recommendations, warning that it undermines transparency and service delivery.

“Only 21 per cent of audit recommendations have been implemented. This means a staggering 79 per cent remain unaddressed,” she said, describing the situation as “deeply disappointing” and indicative of a widespread lack of commitment to fiscal responsibility and good governance.

Gathungu highlighted the need for county governments to strengthen procurement processes by including exit clauses in contracts, allowing lawful termination when contractors fail to meet their obligations.

“The inclusion of such provisions is critical in safeguarding public funds and ensuring that quality is not compromised,” she said.

Her remarks come amid growing public scrutiny over the misuse of taxpayer money and rising calls for stronger accountability mechanisms at all levels of government.

The launch of the new ultra-modern Regional Office Block in Embu was presided over by Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, Auditor General Nancy Gathungu, and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire.

The facility, built through collaboration between the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the Office of the Auditor General, and the County Government of Embu, aims to enhance audit services in Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties.

“This facility demonstrates the power of collaboration in delivering impactful, sustainable projects to our citizens. It brings services closer to the people, enhances public service delivery, and contributes to local economic growth,” Mariru said.

He also emphasised the Ministry of Defence’s expanding role in supporting national development beyond security.

Gathungu described the facility as “a symbol of transparency, accountability and service to the people,” calling on auditors, public officers, and citizens to ensure it becomes “a beacon of transparency, accountability and transformation.”

Governor Mbarire expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and emphasised the importance of audit services in improving performance and service delivery at both national and county levels.
