Murkomen reassures Kenyans on flag incident, urges calm ahead of Police FC vs Mogadishu City clash

Murkomen reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding national pride, stressing that the recent desecration of the Kenyan flag would not go unpunished.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has called on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers for Sunday’s repeat match between Police FC and Mogadishu City FC, while urging them to remain calm and avoid any acts of indiscipline.

Speaking on Thursday during the Garissa County edition of Jukwaa la Usalama, Murkomen reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding national pride, stressing that the recent desecration of the Kenyan flag would not go unpunished.

He clarified that the incident, which was recorded on video and widely shared on social media, was carried out by individuals and should not be associated with the Government of Somalia or its citizens.

"We have a good diplomatic relationship with Somalia. This was not an act of their government. It's individuals who must be held accountable under the law," he said. He added that authorities, through Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, had already launched investigations and that legal action would be taken against those responsible.

Arrested by DCI

According to police, a 17-year-old suspect has been arrested by DCI detectives, who are still pursuing his accomplice.

Section 2B of the National Flag, Emblem & Names Act, Cap 99, states: “Any person who shows disrespect, in speech, manner or writing, to or with reference to the National Anthem, or to any specified emblem, specified likeness or specified name, or any representation thereof, shall be guilty of an offence.”

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government has welcomed an apology issued by the Somali Ambassador to Kenya on Wednesday.

"Thanks for this apology, Ambassador @Ijabril, but looks like you have a missed call from Kenyans on the positioning of the Kenyan flag. I appreciate your giving this matter your courteous consideration. And while at it, to really commend ambassador @Ijabril for his outstanding efforts in fostering Kenya-Somalia relations. In particular, to highlight the critical attention you are giving to our commercial diplomacy and convey our shared commitment in this regard," Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing'oei posted on X.
