Suspect arrested as police rescue woman beaten by brothers in Narok

According to reports, the victim, identified as Lepeita, was attacked by her own brothers after she chose to marry a man they did not approve of. They allegedly attempted to force her into marrying another man from a family of their choosing.

A viral video circulating online, which showed a woman being brutally assaulted in Mbene, Ngarite area of Narok Central Sub-County, Narok County, sparked outrage among social media users.

According to reports, the victim, identified as Lepeita, was attacked by her own brothers after she chose to marry a man they did not approve of. They allegedly attempted to force her into marrying another man from a family of their choosing.

In a statement issued on Friday, Muchari Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and spokesperson for the National Police Service (NPS), confirmed that the victim was rescued by police and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

"The Service strongly condemns this egregious act, which constitutes gender-based violence, assault, and kidnapping. These are criminal acts punishable under Kenyan law," he said.

"Following this incident, the police responded swiftly and rescued the survivor, who was rushed to the hospital for treatment," Nyaga added.

He also confirmed that one suspect has been arrested and is in custody pending arraignment, while a manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the remaining perpetrators.

Nyaga commended members of the public who provided crucial information that led to the arrest and appealed to anyone with further details to report to the nearest police station or share information anonymously via toll-free hotlines 999, 911, or 112, or through #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 and WhatsApp 0709 570 000.

The NPS emphasised its commitment to upholding human rights, fundamental freedoms, and dignity, and vowed to remain at the forefront of the fight against gender-based violence.
