Nairobi among several counties to experience showers and thunderstorms this week - Weatherman

The weatherman said rainfall is expected across several regions, including the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Coast and parts of Western, North western, and North eastern Kenya.

Nairobi is among the regions that will experience showers and thunderstorms from October 14 to 20, 2025, according to the latest weekly weather forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The department said rainfall is expected across several regions, including the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Coast and parts of Western, North western, and North eastern Kenya.

The weatherman urged Kenyans to prepare for varying rainfall intensities in these areas during the forecast period.

Counties likely to experience rainfall include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Narok.

The department noted that afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in a few places during the first half of the forecast period, but will increase to several places thereafter.

“Most nights will be partly cloudy, though some areas may experience light showers,” the weatherman said.

Temperature patterns will also vary across the country. Daytime highs exceeding 30°C are anticipated in the Coast, North eastern and North western regions, making these areas relatively hot.

Conversely, cooler nighttime temperatures below 10°C are expected in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro, signalling chilly nights in those zones.

Most regions in eastern, coastal and northern Kenya will remain hot and dry, with daytime temperatures soaring past 30°C. In the southeastern lowlands covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties, as well as the inland parts of Tana River County, sunny intervals are expected during the day, while nights are likely to be partly cloudy.

At the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and the coastal parts of Tana River County, sunny intervals are also expected during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night. Temperatures will remain around 32°C.

In the North Western region, covering Turkana and Samburu, sunny conditions will dominate throughout the week with occasional rains over a few places by Saturday. Maximum temperatures will remain between 35°C and 37°C.

The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi will experience cloudy mornings breaking into sunny intervals, with a chance of showers over a few places in the afternoons. Nighttime conditions will be partly cloudy, with temperatures ranging from 6°C to 30°C.

In the North Eastern region, comprising Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, sunny intervals will persist with a chance of rain over a few places later in the week. Daytime temperatures will range from 33°C to 36°C.

The Southeastern lowlands are expected to experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights, with maximum temperatures averaging 32°C to 33°C.

Reflecting on the previous week from October 6 to 12, the department reported that rainfall was recorded in several counties, including Kiambu, Nyeri, Kisii, Murang’a, and Kakamega.

“Gakoe Tea Estate in Kiambu County recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall of 67.0 mm on October 7,” the department said.

Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 38.3°C on October 9, while Nyahururu Meteorological Station registered the lowest daily minimum temperature of 5.0°C on October 11. The department observed that daytime (maximum) temperatures decreased across much of the country, with only a few stations, such as Suba, Kisumu and Lodwar, recording slight increases.

“Night time (minimum) temperatures increased in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Coast, the South eastern lowlands, and North western Kenya, but decreased in the rest of the country,” reads the report.

The Kenya Meteorological Department reaffirmed its role as the national authority responsible for providing accurate and timely weather and climate information.

The department urged Kenyans to use the weekly forecast together with daily 24-hour updates and to seek county-specific forecasts from respective County Directors of Meteorological Services.
