As Kenya gathers to bid farewell to Raila Odinga, his widow, Mama Ida Odinga, has urged citizens to embrace peace and unity while mourning the late leader.
Speaking at Nyayo Stadium during the State Funeral Service on Friday, she called on Kenyans to honour Raila’s life through calm reflection and respect.

“I appeal to everyone - let us mourn Raila in peace,” she said, her voice thick with emotion, addressing thousands who had come from across the nation to pay tribute.
Her words were a reminder of Raila’s enduring message: peace starts at home and extends to the broader community.
Raila passed on October 15, 2025, at 80 years old while undergoing treatment in Kerala, India.
His death triggered a seven-day national mourning period, with flags lowered to half-mast and a state funeral arranged by the government.
President William Ruto designated October 17 as a public holiday to enable citizens to participate in the farewell ceremonies.
Acknowledging the sorrow that has gripped millions, Ida encouraged mourners to uphold dignity and unity.
“I know you are all mourning,” she said. “But let us keep peace so that peace can prevail here and in the rest of the country.”
Her appeal came as large crowds thronged memorial sites, including Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium, where security teams worked to manage the flow of mourners.
The Odinga family has led tributes throughout the week, including personal video montages, prayer vigils, and public addresses that have highlighted Raila’s dedication to national service.
Mama Ida’s message has been widely shared across social media platforms, with many praising her strength and composure.
“Her words remind us that Raila’s legacy is not just political, it’s moral,” one user wrote. Others hailed her as “the matriarch of peace,” echoing Raila’s consistent call for unity and harmony.
Raila will be laid to rest in Bondo, Siaya County, beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
