JSC shortlists 100 candidates for 20 High Court Judge positions

Interviews for the posts will be conducted from April 3 to 30, 2024 at CBK Pension Towers, 13 Flour, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi.

The Judicial Service Commission has shortlisted 100 candidates for the position of High Court Judge.

The Commission had invited applications for 20 vacancies from qualified persons wishing to be considered for appointment to the positions in a Gazette notice dated October 13, 2023.

In a statement on Friday, Chief Justice Martha Koome said at the close of the advertisement on November 3, 2023, a total of 305 applications were received.

“The JSC having reviewed the applications for completeness and conformity with the requirements as set out in the advertisement, shortlisted 100 candidates,” Koome said.

Interviews for the posts will be conducted from April 3 to 30, 2024 at CBK Pension Towers, 13 Flour, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi.

Candidates can access the list of applicants and the specific dates and times of the interview at the Commission's website.

The Commission has invited members of the public to avail in writing any information of interest in respect to any of the shortlisted candidates on or before March 21, 2024, at 5 pm.

Qualified candidates will serve as Judges of the High Court by overseeing unlimited original jurisdiction in criminal and civil matters.

For appointment to the position, the applicant must hold a law degree from a recognized university, be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, or possess an equivalent qualification in a Common law jurisdiction.

They should also have at least 10 years of experience as a superior court judge or a professionally qualified magistrate.

Additionally, they must have at least 10 years of experience as a distinguished academic or legal practitioner or such experience in other relevant legal fields.

Further, the candidate must have a high moral character, integrity and impartiality that meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity

“The applicants should demonstrate a high degree of professional competence, communication skills, fairness, good temperament, good judgment, wide breadth of both legal and life experience and demonstrable commitment to public and community service,” the Commission said.

The appointment shall be made in accordance with Article 166 (1)(b), (2) and (5) of the 2010 Constitution and Section 30, Part V and the First Schedule of the Judicial Service Act, No. 1 of 2011.
