Elgeyo Marakwet landslide death toll rises to 39 as search continues for nine others
To assist families with resettlement and other essential needs, the government has announced a fundraiser to be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at AIC Milimani, Nairobi, starting at 4:00 pm.
The death toll from the Elgeyo Marakwet landslide has risen to 39, with nine people still reported missing and six others receiving treatment, the government has confirmed.
Search, rescue, and recovery operations are ongoing, as authorities continue to ensure that all missing persons are accounted for and affected families receive the necessary support.

The tragedy has caused immense sorrow in the affected communities. In a statement, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura extended the deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones.

"We call upon leaders, organisations, institutions, and all compassionate Kenyans of goodwill to join in standing with the affected families as they work to rebuild. This moment calls for unity, empathy, and collective responsibility," said Mwaura.
Burial arrangements for the victims have also been confirmed. The funeral for a grandmother and her grandchild from the Kibendo area, Keiyo North, is scheduled for Friday, November 14, 2025.
A mass funeral and burial ceremony for victims from Kerio Valley will take place on Friday, November 21, 2025, while victims from Embobut and Upper Sambirir are set to be laid to rest on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
The government said it will continue to provide support to bereaved families during these ceremonies.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to providing humanitarian assistance and long-term support to all affected households.
Measures are being taken to restore livelihoods and strengthen community safety and resilience in the impacted areas.
“No family will be left behind,” Mwaura said.
